Frequently Asked Questions — Driving Lessons & EDT
What is Essential Driver Training (EDT)?
Essential Driver Training (EDT) is a mandatory programme for first-time learners in Ireland. It consists of 12 structured lessons with an RSA-approved driving instructor, covering the core skills needed to drive safely. You cannot sit your driving test without completing all 12 EDT lessons.
How many driving lessons do I need before my test?
First-time learners must complete the full 12 EDT lessons before sitting their driving test. Experienced drivers or foreign licence holders may be eligible for Reduced EDT — a minimum of 6 lessons. Beyond the mandatory lessons, the number of additional lessons needed depends on each student’s progress.
What driving test centre does SafeStart use?
SafeStart lessons in Limerick are focused on the Raheen test centre. Liam is familiar with the test routes at Raheen and test preparation lessons are conducted on the actual roads used in the test.
What is Reduced EDT?
Reduced EDT is available to experienced drivers and foreign licence holders who can demonstrate existing driving competence. An initial assessment is required to confirm eligibility. The minimum is 6 structured lessons, logged with the RSA. It is not a shortcut — you still sit and pass the full Irish driving test.
Can I use an automatic car for my driving test?
You can sit your driving test in an automatic car, but your licence will then restrict you to automatic vehicles only. SafeStart’s car for test is a manual Toyota Yaris. If you wish to test in an automatic, you will need to arrange your own automatic vehicle.
What areas does SafeStart cover?
SafeStart is based in Caherdavin, Limerick and covers Limerick city and Shannon, including Castletroy, Raheen, Dooradoyle, Corbally, and surrounding areas. Contact Liam to confirm availability in your specific area.
