Reduced EDT is a shortened Essential Driver Training programme for eligible learner drivers who have received approval from the RSA. SafeStart provides structured, assessment-led Reduced EDT lessons across Limerick and Shannon, helping experienced drivers progress towards their Irish driving test.

What is Reduced EDT?
Reduced EDT is a shortened version of the Essential Driver Training programme for eligible drivers who have been approved by the RSA. The approved programme consists of six prescribed sessions, rather than the full 12 Essential Driver Training (EDT) lessons.
SafeStart’s role is to deliver the Reduced EDT lessons and assess your current driving standard. Completing Reduced EDT does not automatically mean you are test-ready, and additional Driving Test Preparation lessons may be recommended depending on your experience and driving ability.
Who is Reduced EDT For?
To be eligible for Reduced EDT, you typically need:
- RSA Reduced EDT approval
- Valid Irish learner permit
- Previous driving experience
- Current driving standard suitable for Reduced EDT
Reduced EDT may apply to drivers who already have significant driving experience or a full driving licence from another country, but eligibility must be confirmed by the RSA before the programme begins.
How the Reduced EDT Programme Works

RSA Approval
Reduced EDT is available only to drivers who have received approval from the RSA confirming their eligibility for the programme.
Reduced EDT Lessons
Liam assesses your current driving standard and delivers the six RSA-prescribed Reduced EDT sessions, with progress recorded in your EDT logbook.

Driving Test Preparation
Once the programme is complete, additional Driving Test Preparation lessons may be recommended to help you prepare for your driving test and reach the required standard.
